Meet a Mystic a Month

"Each month, we walk with one great mystic — a teacher, a poet, a seer. We learn their story, live their practice, and let their wisdom become our own."

Not something to study. Something to live.

July

Henry David Thoreau

1817–1862 · Transcendentalism

In 1845, Henry David Thoreau walked into the woods at Walden Pond with an axe, a handful of borrowed tools, and a question: what does it mean to live deliberately? What he found there — in two years of simplicity, solitude, and radical attention — became one of the most enduring invitations in American letters. Thoreau didn't ask us to leave civilization. He asked us to stop sleepwalking through it. This month, we walk with the man who taught us that the examined life is not a luxury — it is the only life worth living.

August

Helena Blavatsky

1831–1891 · Theosophy

Born to Russian nobility, Helena Blavatsky left a life of comfort to circle the globe in search of the wisdom hidden beneath the world's religions. She co-founded the Theosophical Society in 1875 and gave the West a new vocabulary for the Soul — karma, reincarnation, the unity of all traditions. Fierce, brilliant, and utterly unafraid of public opinion, she insisted that beneath every faith runs a single stream of Truth. This month, we walk with the seeker who spent her life proving the sacred and the scientific were never enemies.

September

Emma Curtis Hopkins

1849–1925 · New Thought

She is called the Teacher of Teachers — and for good reason. Nearly every founder of modern New Thought studied at her feet: the Fillmores who built Unity, Ernest Holmes who founded Religious Science, the women who founded Divine Science. In an era when women were kept silent, Emma Curtis Hopkins ordained them into ministry and sent them out to change the spiritual landscape of a nation. This month, we sit with the quiet source behind a movement — the mystic who taught a generation how to remember their own Divinity.

October

Thomas Troward

1847–1916 · Mental Science

A judge in British India by profession, Thomas Troward spent his evenings pondering the deepest question of all: how does the individual mind relate to the Mind of the Universe? When he retired, he set down his answers in lectures so clear and so profound they shaped the entire New Thought movement — Ernest Holmes called him a primary teacher. Troward married the precision of a legal mind to the vastness of Spirit. This month, we walk with the thinker who showed us that Universal Mind is the creative power moving through all of nature — and through us.

November

Ella Wheeler Wilcox

1850–1919 · Poet of New Thought

Before "mind over matter" was a phrase on everyone's lips, Ella Wheeler Wilcox was writing it into verse the whole world could sing. A wildly popular American poet and journalist, she wove New Thought optimism into poems so accessible they slipped straight into the culture's memory. She believed our thoughts shape our world and our attitude writes our fate. This month, as the light turns inward toward gratitude, we walk with the poet who taught millions that joy is a practice — and the heart's weather is ours to choose.

December

Rumi

1207–1273 · Sufi Mystic

Eight centuries later, Rumi remains one of the most beloved voices the world has ever known. A respected scholar and jurist in his day, his life split open when he met the wandering mystic Shams of Tabriz — and out of that friendship, and its loss, poured an ocean of poetry about longing, union, and the Beloved. His words dissolve the walls between traditions; they belong to everyone who has ever ached toward the Divine. This month, in the deep of winter, we walk with the Sufi poet who found the whole universe inside the human heart.
